The Gambia's National Assembly has placed the spotlight on the country's automotive sector after the Finance and Public Accounts Committee (FPAC) recommended a police investigation into a Toyota Prado procurement contract valued at US$1.3 million. The investigation follows concerns surrounding the purchase of 14 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs under the Sub-Saharan Africa Women's Empowerment and Development Dividend Plus (SWEDD+) Project.

Questions Raised Over Toyota Prado Supplier Selection
According to FPAC, the contract for the Toyota Prado procurement was awarded to KMF Technologies Company Ltd in December 2023. However, the committee found that the company was neither a registered motor vehicle dealer nor an authorized Toyota distributor in The Gambia.
The report noted that CFAO Gambia Ltd, the country's official Toyota distributor, was available to supply the vehicles but was not awarded the contract. Instead, investigators found that KMF Technologies sourced 10 of the Toyota Prado SUVs through AYK Rentals, while the vehicles themselves were imported by CFAO Gambia under a government duty waiver.
